Mystical Maternity Portraits

Even though I studied photography in addition to art, and I enjoyed photographing families and events for many years, I have never been a fan of having my own picture taken. With each pregnancy I would not even consider maternity pictures, and after giving birth, it was a struggle to have my picture taken. I did it once with my son, and never with my daughter.

This time around I decided to find a solution, a way to commemorate this sacred time in a way that is all my own. I decided to create a maternity painting, and in this painting I added three animals that represented an important aspect of my life. The fish represents my time near the sea, and my longing for the ocean side. The butterfly has always been my fluttering companion. I love butterflies and their delicate grace. Finally, the humming bird representing mi patria querida, Colombia.

At the bottom I added flowers, which represent the growing and blooming of life within me.

I drew this in my watercolor notebook and began painting it, however, I wasn't sure which colors I wanted to use so I scanned it and placed it in Procreate.

As always, the end effect between digital and watercolor is quite different.
